TrustLeaf has developed an online platform that helps small-business owners borrow money from friends and family using personal loans. Business owners set up a campaign page that they invite friends and family to visit. The lenders choose what amount and terms they’re comfortable with. Then both parties sign agreements online. TrustLeaf also offers to keep track of repayments. The process cuts some of the awkwardness out of asking friends and family for an investment and sets up legal protections for the lenders.
How it makes money
Users pay a monthly fee for access to TrustLeaf’s tools and services. The company also gets transaction fees if repayments are made on its platform.
Business it could disrupt
Existing small-business lending could be disrupted by a platform that makes it easier to raise money outside of the traditional banking channels.

The SBA estimates $60 billion in personal loans are made annually between friends and family to start a small business. This represents 38 percent of the 6 million new small businesses launched in the U.S. every year. The amount loaned on average is about $25,000 and the loans are typically paid back in about 18 months.
